Easy Fatigue or Reduced Exercise Tolerance
If a child becomes unusually tired compared with other children of the same age, becomes breathless with routine activity or avoids physical activity because of fatigue, a cardiac assessment may be appropriate.
Recurrent Fainting or Dizziness
Fainting, especially during exercise, or recurrent episodes of dizziness should be evaluated. Certain heart rhythm or structural heart conditions can present with these symptoms.
Palpitations or Fast Heartbeat
Children who complain of racing, pounding or irregular heartbeats, particularly when episodes are recurrent or associated with dizziness, fainting, chest discomfort or breathlessness, may need cardiac evaluation.
Chest Pain
Most chest pain in children is not caused by heart disease. However, chest pain associated with exercise, fainting, palpitations or significant breathlessness should be assessed by a doctor.
Heart Murmur
If a doctor has detected a heart murmur, particularly if it is associated with symptoms or other abnormal examination findings, consultation with a Pediatric Cardiologist may be recommended.
