When Should Parents Contact Dr. Rachna Sable?

Recognising the Warning Signs of Heart Disease in Children

Warning signs of heart disease in children including breathing difficulty, excessive sweating during feeding, poor weight gain, bluish discoloration, fatigue, fainting, palpitations, chest pain and heart murmur

Many children with heart disease may initially appear healthy, while some may develop symptoms that parents can easily mistake for common childhood problems. Early recognition of warning signs and timely evaluation by a Pediatric Cardiologist can help identify heart problems at an appropriate stage.

Parents should consider consulting Dr. Rachna Sable, Pediatric Cardiologist & Fetal Cardiologist, if their child has any of the following concerns:

Difficulty in Breathing

Breathing faster than usual, breathlessness during feeding or activity, persistent respiratory difficulty, or getting tired quickly while playing may warrant cardiac evaluation.

Excessive Sweating During Feeding

In infants, excessive sweating, tiredness or difficulty breathing while feeding can sometimes be associated with increased cardiac workload, particularly when accompanied by poor feeding or inadequate weight gain.

Poor Feeding or Poor Weight Gain

Babies who tire easily during feeds, take unusually long to feed, sweat excessively while feeding or do not gain weight appropriately may require evaluation.

Bluish Discoloration

Bluish lips, tongue, nails or skin, particularly when associated with breathing difficulty or feeding problems, should not be ignored and requires prompt medical assessment.

Easy Fatigue or Reduced Exercise Tolerance

If a child becomes unusually tired compared with other children of the same age, becomes breathless with routine activity or avoids physical activity because of fatigue, a cardiac assessment may be appropriate.

Recurrent Fainting or Dizziness

Fainting, especially during exercise, or recurrent episodes of dizziness should be evaluated. Certain heart rhythm or structural heart conditions can present with these symptoms.

Palpitations or Fast Heartbeat

Children who complain of racing, pounding or irregular heartbeats, particularly when episodes are recurrent or associated with dizziness, fainting, chest discomfort or breathlessness, may need cardiac evaluation.

Chest Pain

Most chest pain in children is not caused by heart disease. However, chest pain associated with exercise, fainting, palpitations or significant breathlessness should be assessed by a doctor.

Heart Murmur

If a doctor has detected a heart murmur, particularly if it is associated with symptoms or other abnormal examination findings, consultation with a Pediatric Cardiologist may be recommended.

Recurrent Respiratory Problems

Repeated episodes of breathing difficulty or respiratory symptoms, particularly when associated with poor growth, feeding difficulty, excessive sweating or reduced exercise tolerance, may warrant evaluation for an underlying cardiac condition.

Family History of Heart Disease

Children with a family history of congenital heart disease, certain inherited cardiac conditions or unexplained sudden death at a young age may benefit from appropriate cardiac assessment.

When Should You Seek Urgent Medical Attention?

Parents should seek urgent medical care if a child develops severe breathing difficulty, marked bluish discoloration, loss of consciousness, severe or sudden chest symptoms, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Every symptom does not mean that a child has heart disease. Many of these symptoms can have other causes. However, persistent, recurrent or concerning symptoms deserve appropriate medical evaluation.

Early Recognition Can Make a Difference

Dr. Rachna Sable believes that parents are often the first to notice changes in their child’s health. Recognising warning signs and seeking timely medical advice can help ensure that children who need specialist cardiac evaluation receive it at the right time.

Frequently asked Question -Child Heart Diseases

1. What does a Pediatric Cardiologist do?

A Pediatric Cardiologist specialises in diagnosing and managing heart conditions in newborns, infants, children and adolescents, including congenital and acquired heart diseases.

A child may need cardiac evaluation if there are symptoms such as breathing difficulty, excessive sweating during feeding, poor weight gain, bluish discoloration, easy fatigue, recurrent fainting, palpitations or a suspected heart murmur.

Common warning signs can include rapid or difficult breathing, poor feeding, excessive sweating, poor growth, bluish lips or nails, easy tiredness, fainting or reduced exercise tolerance.

A heart murmur is an extra sound heard during a heartbeat with a stethoscope. Many murmurs in children are innocent, but some may indicate an underlying heart problem and require further evaluation.

Not necessarily. The need for an echocardiogram depends on the child’s symptoms, examination findings and the characteristics of the murmur. A Pediatric Cardiologist can determine whether further testing is appropriate.

Pediatric Echocardiography is an ultrasound examination of the heart that evaluates the heart’s structure, chambers, valves, blood flow and pumping function.

Yes. Echocardiography uses ultrasound waves and does not involve radiation. It is a commonly used, non-invasive cardiac investigation in children.

Congenital heart disease refers to a structural abnormality of the heart or major blood vessels that is present from birth. It may range from a small defect requiring only monitoring to a complex condition requiring intervention.

Yes. Some congenital heart defects can be identified during pregnancy using Fetal Echocardiography, a specialised ultrasound examination of the fetal heart.

Fetal Echocardiography is a specialised examination of the developing baby’s heart during pregnancy. It provides detailed information about cardiac structure and blood flow and can help identify certain congenital heart abnormalities before birth.

It may be recommended when there is a family history of congenital heart disease, an abnormal antenatal ultrasound, certain maternal medical conditions, fetal abnormalities or other recognised risk factors.

No. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the heart defect. Some children only require regular follow-up, while others may need medication, catheter-based intervention or surgery.

Some small congenital heart defects, depending on their type and location, may close spontaneously. The Pediatric Cardiologist can advise whether observation and periodic echocardiography are appropriate.

A Pediatric ECG (electrocardiogram) records the electrical activity of the heart. It can help evaluate heart rhythm, conduction abnormalities and certain structural or electrical cardiac conditions.

Not necessarily. The Pediatric Cardiologist decides which investigations are appropriate based on the child’s symptoms and clinical examination.

Yes. Hypertension can occur in children and adolescents and may sometimes be associated with kidney, heart, endocrine or other medical conditions. Appropriate blood-pressure measurement and evaluation are important.

Yes. Rheumatic heart disease can affect children following rheumatic fever and may cause damage to the heart valves. Early recognition and appropriate treatment are important in preventing long-term complications.

Easy fatigue can have many causes and does not necessarily mean heart disease. However, if fatigue is persistent, disproportionate to activity or associated with breathlessness, fainting, chest discomfort or poor exercise tolerance, cardiac evaluation may be appropriate.

No. Most chest pain in children is not caused by heart disease, but certain patterns of chest pain—particularly when associated with exercise, fainting, palpitations or a family history of sudden cardiac death—require medical evaluation.

Early diagnosis can help determine the appropriate monitoring, medical treatment, intervention or surgical planning and can allow families to receive timely specialist care.

Follow-up depends on the specific heart condition, its severity, treatment and the child’s age. Some children require periodic monitoring, while others may need more frequent cardiac assessments.

Many children with congenital heart disease can lead active and fulfilling lives, particularly when their condition is appropriately diagnosed, treated and followed up. The outlook varies according to the specific cardiac condition.

23. What should I bring for my child’s Pediatric Cardiology consultation?

Dr. Rachna Sable, Pediatric Cardiologist & Fetal Cardiologist, provides specialist Pediatric and Fetal Cardiology services in Ahilyanagar (Ahmednagar), Maharashtra, including pediatric and fetal echocardiography.
